Humans need nature. For millions of years, we have had a relationship with nature based on respect. Nature dictated our sleep patterns and provided food and water. However, we have begun to avoid being outdoors, opting for the ease and comfort of the indoors, where there is air-conditioning and WiFi. But by disconnecting from nature, we have lost a valuable resource for health and happiness. While not all research is conclusive if it is the negative ions, the bacteria in the dirt, or vitamin D from the sun, time and again studies show nature has a positive effect on our lives.
Studies found that a brief 15 minute walk in nature reduces blood pressure, resting heart rate and levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Additionally, there was an increase of 37% of the immune's system killer cells, making it more likely to fight against disease and sickness. All this took was a 15 minute walk in nature. And the benefits of moving your body in nature fights against obesity.
Nature has also been shown to have positive effects on mental health, as it reduces stress, depression, and ADHD symptoms. A recent study was done on the benefits of just having a window looking out on nature and found that it speeds recovery from surgery, increases work performance, and boosts job satisfaction. Current studies even show that being in nature and not multi-tasking improves memory.
Finally, being in nature helps you connect to the community at large. It is next to impossible not to feel part of something larger when surrounded by the trees, the sun, and the earth. As naturalist John Muir said, "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
