Chances are, you have eaten over 6,000 products that contain aspartame recently, even though it has been proven to be the most dangerous food substance added to food. Aspartame was originally created to be an anti-ulcer drug in the 60's by Searle Pharaceuticals, which is now Pfizer. Although it was banned twice, the artificial sweetener was allowed to be added to food in the 80's.
Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. There have been reports of neurological decline, seizures, cancer, and even death. Research has found that drinking 2 aspartame-containing drinks a day increase heart disease by 50%. Many of these reactions are very serious, including seizures and death. What makes aspartame so deadly? It is made of three very toxic chemicals (aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol).
Aspartic acid (40% of aspartame) - has been proven to kill brain neurons and increase other biological maladies. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology has warned that infants and woman of childbearing age should avoid aspartic acid. And, the typically conservative FDA has pointed at its risk to infants and pregnant woman. It has been linked to memory loss, which was so common that Searle Pharmaceuticals attempted to come up with a drug to help with this. It also increases emotional disturbances, headaches/migraines, fatigue, nausea, sleep problems, abdominal pains, vision problems, asthma, hormone problems, neuroendocrine disorders, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, hypoglycemia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and brain lesions.
Phenylalanine (50% of aspartame) - is an amino acid normally found in the brain; excessive amounts can cause a drop in serotonin, leading to emotional disorders such as depression, mood swings, schizophrenia, and violence. This can be seen with a single use of aspartame. Significant use can lead to brain damage. The studies that Congress used to approve aspartame were flawed, since it has been proven that mice metabolize phenylalanine differently than humans. Sadly, this has boosted sales of Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as Prozac and Paxil.
Methanol/wood alcohol (10% of aspartame) breaks down into formaldehyde, a deadly neurotoxin in the body that has a low secretion rate. This is quickly absorbed when the product is heated above 86 degrees due to improper storage or cooking, such as sugar-free Jello. The EPA has declared that a maximum of 7.8 mg of methanol per day is safe. One liter of an aspartame-sweetened beverage contains 56 mgs. Symptoms of methanol poisoning are more than the most commonly known vision damage and carcinogen; they include birth defects, headaches and dizziness, gastrointestinal distress, pain and numbness, behavioral and emotional disturbance.
DKP (Diketopiperazine) - the by product of aspartame metabolism and created in prolonged storage has been linked to brain tumors, uterine polyps and changes in cholesterol. There has been no credible research to disprove this.
So if you are craving something sweet, first get in the healthy habit of reading the ingredients label and, second, use real sugar or fruit juice!
