"Passed" is used as a verb, meaning go beyond. For example, The car passed the horse and buggy. Not all use of the word "passed" has to do with physical movement. An example of this would be: The student passed all of her classes.
"Past" only refers to previous time. For example, In the past, people had to call each other with a phone that had a wire attached to it.
